The still small voice of the people II (2026)

25 October | 20:00-20:40

“The still small voice of the people II” (2026) for PAME KAIMAKLI is a continuation of the performance event “One Square Foot: the still small voice of the people” (2005-2006)

HISTORY / PAST The original performance in 2006, drew on image and metaphor, as well as fragments of autobiographical narrative, and focused on the old Cyprus Government Railway that ran across the whole island of Cyprus between 1901 and 1951. It connected the predominantly Turkish Cypriot and predominantly Greek Cypriot communities in Nicosia within the district of Kaimakli. The performance then, out of ‘two square feet’ on either side of the military divide, created a third square foot, which would imaginatively lie in the buffer zone, to which access is still not permitted. The marking of it, held the intention of looking for different ways of understanding it, in order to perhaps eventually heal and forgive. One of these ways, included the bringing together of two beehives, while in the background, videos of faces of children (from both sides of the divide), aged between 5–10 years, were projected, along with the song KORKMA / ΜΕΝ ΦΟΑΣΑΙ (“DO NOT FEAR”).

PRESENT Today, twenty years later, Echo – Arts/ Arianna Economou with REHEARSAL studio, create a new third square foot by the Regis Factory and the old Railway Line that used to connect the two ‘Kaimaklis’, Kucuck Kaimakli and Kaimakli. This joining includes artists (from both sides) who were then themselves 5-10 years old, the same age as the children of the original performance. These artists are Ulaş Öğüç (musician/ actor) and Galateia Christodoulou (performer/ dancer) who both today cross, work, collaborate and present work on both sides of the military divide
